The Giant Dipper rollercoaster has been rocking and rolling at the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk since 1924 (the year before my mother was born). By today’s rollercoaster standards, it is pretty tame. There are no loops or spirals, no straight free-falls, and you don’t go backwards. It is however, still my favorite. I think some of the excitement is the vibration and noise it makes – it really does sound like it’s older than my mother. I never thought of it that way before – and it’s probably a good thing I didn’t think about that BEFORE I bought my ticket.
It’s very exhillerating to ride and it’s impossible to not scream; in fact, it helps to scream. Two young boys in the seat in front of me kept looking back at me and laughing, I guess I was making my own noises. It made my hair turn white….at the time I rode it back in 1976.
